这是一个真实的故事，发生在二十世纪九十年代的北京某中学。 云南边远山区傈僳族失学女孩白马度与同样优秀的同学何青青，用比山歌的形式获得了由中国妇联“春蕾计划”资助去北京上“春蕾班”的机会。白马度非常高兴但又感觉很对不起自己要好的朋友。 白马度和其他省市选出来的二十九名女孩子一起来到了北京进入了“春蕾班”。她们的一切学习及生活费用全部由中国儿童少年基金会的“春蕾计划”负责。 这些第一次走出大山的孩子突然到了自己向往已久的祖国首都之后，处处感到新鲜、稀奇和惊讶，还有很多不适应等着她们，按照学校规定一切要求统一，她们顺利地脱下民族服装换上了漂亮的校服，个个笑逐颜开；统一发型剪掉长头发，人人却愁眉苦脸；白马度死活不同意剪掉心爱的长发，齐晓岚看到剪子竟吓得嚎啕大哭。澡堂里，从来没有在水龙头下面洗过澡的同学们都不敢脱衣服，白马度竟然穿着衣服洗澡；食堂里，看到白花花的米饭和香喷喷的排骨，大家惊呆了谁都不敢动碗筷。班主任叶老师目睹这一切，不仅皱起了眉头，这些十几岁少数民族学生的生活能力竟然不如北京幼儿园六七岁的孩子，她思考下一步如何“修理”这些可爱漂亮的美少女们。 影片真实而生动地讲述了以主人公白马度等为代表的三十名“春蕾生”在北京不同寻常、充满情趣的学习生活经历。展现了社会各界对“春蕾少女”无微不致的关怀、爱护和教育。也表现了“春蕾生”初到首都北京的种种不适应，尤其是主人公白马度由于不适应北京的学习生活和环境偷跑回了老家。后来，经过多方帮助使她认识到了自己的错误重新返回北京，并逐渐变得成熟起来成为一名品学兼优的好学生。
