民国初年，江南古镇陶家大院。这日陶家上下正为后院古井冒出伴有腥味的绿水怪事胆战心惊，在上海做生意6年不曾归家的陶老爷（李立群）的书信送至，称会在家中过六十大寿。大太太（宋春丽）掐指算计，老爷生日不过后天。陶家人开始忙作一团，却多在掩盖6年来的是是非非。但他们迎来的只是一具面目模糊的尸体及一个身着孝衣的纤细女子（赵琳）。女子名叫仪萍，自称是五姨太，并言死者正是陶老爷，她的话即刻在陶家引起轩然大波。其后，二姨太桂云（史可）、三姨太雅芝（何赛飞）、四姨太玉翠（高蓓蓓）及大少爷陶书利（修庆）、三姨太的情人大梅子（陈笑非）等人与她展开斗智战，但她并不像他们一样是为陶家家产，而她与无心参战的二少爷陶书远（贾一平）之间，似也有旁人参不透的迷情。
